Geeky Trivia: Tried to look-up the origin of this poem ..

Star light, star bright,
First star I see tonight,

.. all the sites say is, “Nursery rhyme with American history and origins. The lyrics to this nursery rhyme are believed to be of late 19th century American origins and the lyrics allude to the fantasy that you can wish upon a star. This nursery rhyme has no doubt been used on many occasions to quieten a child ready for bedtime as they patiently look out of the window waiting for it to get dark enough to see the very first star!” .. not real informative, all the sites say exactly the same thing, and no one gives credit to its original author.

Why didn’t any of the sites give credit?

I am fairly certain you don’t need me to tell you not to steal .. I am also sure that you know if you take someone else’s ideas &/or work and do not give them the credit their due or don’t pay them what you owe them it is stealing .. I am sure you understand how taking credit for someone else’s creativity just makes you completely lame .. so what’s your problem? Give credit, pay the charge.

Wonder why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine’s Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon.

Today marks the start of the Chinese Lunar New Year 2012, the Year of the Dragon. One of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, the dragon signifies good fortune and power. In the Chinese astrological cycle, this year is also associated with the element of water, which makes 2012 the Year of the Water Dragon — an emblem of optimism and growth that comes around only once every 60 years. People around the world are ushering in this auspicious year with displays of fireworks, family get-togethers, temple visits, and street festivals. Collected below are images from several countries where revelers have been welcoming the arrival of the Water Dragon.

Dubstep is a genre of electronic music that has been around for over a decade. In recent months, this subgenre has begun to receive a lot of public attention in dance clubs all over the world. As of late 2011, this particular style of music has recently started to spread throughout the United States like a tidal wave of heavy bass wobbles and hard-hitting kick drums.

The Tempo

The trait that makes dubstep easier to identify is the narrow tempo range. Although usually 140 beats per minute, some of the released tracks in this genre have varied from 138 to 142 beats per minute, still a very small range in tempo. In terms of music, these tempos allow for easy manipulation of alternating between half time and full time for hard-hitting breakdowns and half tempo switch ups.

The Beat

Another thing that dubstep is known for having is a heavy drum and choppy rhythm section. Typical of this subgenre of electronic music, this style likes to use shuffled, chopped and syncopated beats to produce a heavy, gritty, dirty, nasty sound. Heavy emphasis is placed on the kick drum and the other instruments in the percussion section within this genre of music. Unlike most styles of electronic music, this genre relies on longer, more interesting percussion loops to drive the music along.

The Wobble

Probably the most distinguishable characteristic of dubstep music is the “wobble” bass. This specific sound is created through the use of a synthesizer and is manipulated rhythmically using low-frequency oscillators to create heart stopping sound waves. The wobble bass is typically composed of sub frequencies that are felt more than they are heard. The wobble bass is usually accompanied by a simple melody or musical riff and the combination of the two, along with the percussion section, is used to drive the music.

The Drop

The drop is accomplished by creating a short break in the percussion of a track and then slamming the listener with a wall of noise made up of throbbing bass and an ultra heavy drum beat. The drop is the portion of the song that is often the most anticipated and a lot of work goes into building up the music before the drop actually happens in the mix. A song can contain multiple drops that typically increase in intensity. The music bombshell is often referred to as “the drop” or “dropping the bass.”

PHILADELPHIA –Philly’s Soul and Laughter Series will be dedicated to showcasing Philadelphia’s local talent, and on December 17^th it begins with an amazing night of Rhythm & Blues and clean Comedy staring two of Philadelphia’s finest products.

The evening stars Kindred the Family Soul, an American R&B, soul, and neo soul duo which consists of the married couple of Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon; and TuRae, one of the funniest comedians in the game, fresh off appearances on the Royal Comedy Tour, Atlantic City Comedy Festival and Kevin Hart’s stand up movie “Laugh At My Pain”.

Moses the Comic will host the evening filled with other Philadelphia-based talent including a special musical performance by Rachel Raquel.

By attending, you’ll get an awesome show & help out a good cause at the same time. Kindred the Family Soul is donating part of their proceeds to keep the Hafeezah Nurid-Din’s Nur Academy Open. Nurid-Din was an innocent by-stander killed in a gun battle on 58^th Street. The 31-year-old mother of four, from Overbook, had recently completed her master’s degree, and owned/operated a private elementary school and day-care center.

PHILADELPHIA: On Saturday, October 8th, Robert Burden and his Tap Team Two dance company will bring hoofing, the old form of percussive dance, to Philly.

Prepare to be amazed as Tap Team Two – a group of eight dancers – takes a tap performance to a whole new level using street tap, better known as hoofing, as the basis of their choreography.

The Tap Team Two dance company is lead by Philadelphia’s own Robert Burden, whose unique approach to performing and his teaching skills have taken him to Turkey, Taiwan, Germany, the Czech Rep, and he was also a “fly squad” member of Riverdance.

Their art form evolved from the roots of Irish clogging, African dance, street and social dances. Their exciting rhythmic sounds have kept crowds are on their feet from the first “song” to the last.

~ BIOS ~

Robert Burden is the Artist Director of Tap Team Two and Company. His performing and teaching skills have taken him to Turkey, Taiwan, Germany and the Czech Rep. Robert had the pleasure of being a “fly squad” member of Riverdance.

Corinne Karon is the Executive Director of Tap Team Two and Company. She is also the Founder and Artistic Director of another tap company Uniting Colleges Through Tap Corinne has had the wonderful opportunity to have tap danced on every continent in the world, yes including Antarctica.

Barbora Burden was born in Prague, Czech Republic, where she had her own tap company called Tappy Dancers. She began studying tap in Washington, DC which began her relationship with Tap Team Two. Bara has been tap dancing in the USA since June 2003.

Rochelle Haynes has been performing with Tap Team Two and Company for 15 years. She is currently the only tap instructor in the day school program at the University of the Arts. Her studies have taken her within the US, Brazil and Czech Rep. She has been taking classes from the Masters of tap for over 11 years.

Pamela Hetherington is the founder of Tap Teaser, a bi-yearly performance series for tap dancers and jazz musicians. She has organized many events for the Philadelphia tap community including Tap Teaser, Tap Jams and most recently co-produced Too Darn Hot, an all female review performed in the 2011 Philly Fringe Festival.

JoAnna Turner has been performing with Tap Team Two and Company for over 10 years. She is currently a Masters candidate at Drexel University in the Dance/Movement Therapy program. She teaches ballet at the University of Pennsylvania and considers tap the “dessert of her life.”

Tim Yue has been tap dancing for 19 years. He studied tap with Philadelphia based tap Master LaVaughn Robinson. He has also studied Tabla (Indian classical drumming) with K.Prashant.

Kat Richter, former principal dancer with the New Jersey Tap Ensemble, is a freelance writer and teaching artist. She holds an MA in Dance Anthropology. This is Kat’s first year performing with Tap Team Two. Most recently she co-produced Too Darn Hot, an all female review performed in the 2011 Philly Fringe Festival.
